Arizona’s Trey Townsend Withdraws from NBA Draft

NCAA Basketball: NCAA Tournament West Regional-Arizona vs Clemson

The Horizon Player of the Year, Trey Townsend, transferred to the Arizona Wildcats this offseason after playing four seasons with the Oakland Golden Grizzlies.

Townsend tested NBA waters during the Draft Combine, but has elected to return to the Wildcats for his final year of eligibility, as reported by On3.

This season, the 6-foot-6 power forward averaged 17.3 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 3.1 assists in 36 games.

The transfer forward chose the Wildcats over Michigan, Michigan State, and Ohio State, via ESPN.

He became a household name in college basketball after leading Oakland to an upset win over the Kentucky Wildcats in the first round of the 2024 NCAA Tournament. Townsend finished 17 points, 12 rebounds, and four assists in the game.

The Golden Grizzlies’ season came to an end in the Round of 32 in a loss to NC State, however Townsend made a statement dropping 30 points, to go along with 13 rebounds in the overtime defeat.

With the graduation of Keshad Johnson, Townsend is expected to have a big role with Arizona under head coach Tommy Lloyd.

The Wildcats finished the 2023-24 campaign 27-9, ranking first in the Big 12 before losing to Clemson in the Sweet 16. This season will be the first year competing in the Big 12 Conference.
