Grant McCasland and the Texas Tech Red Raiders made a big splash through the transfer portal on Tuesday with the commitment of Mountain West Freshman of the Year, New Mexico forward JT Toppin.

Toppin withdrew his name from the NBA Draft after a lengthy time considering turning pro and will now head to Lubbock to play for Grant McCasland.

Last season with the Lobos, Toppin made a name for himself as the MWC Freshman of the Year. The Texas native posted 12.4 points and 9.1 rebounds per game while connecting on 62.3% of his shots from the field.

Coming out of Faith Family Academy of Oak Cliff in the Class of 2023, Toppin was listed as a four-star prospect by the 247Sports index and the nation’s 111th-ranked player. He also checked in as the 24th-ranked player at his position and the ninth-ranked player in the state of Texas.

With his commitment, Toppin became the fourth addition to Texas Tech’s impressive portal haul, joining Minnesota’s Elijah Hawkins, Drake’s Kevin Overton, and Pittsburgh’s Federiko Federiko.

While Grant McCasland dazzled in Year One with the Red Raiders, Texas Tech’s coaching staff is doing everything they can this offseason to ensure they field yet another championship-caliber team in the Big 12 Conference.
