Texas Tech Trending for Elite 2025 EDGE Smith Orogbo

NCAA Football: Houston at Texas Tech

The title of the top recruiting power in the Big 12 is up for grabs with Texas and Oklahoma headed to the SEC, but Joey McGuire and Texas Tech are making a case for the Red Raiders to take the throne before anyone else can make a pass at it.

In the 2024 class, Texas Tech landed five-star wide receiver Micah Hudson–who looks to be a Day 1 contributor in Lubbock–and elite four-star safety Peyton Morgan. Now, it appears that the Red Raiders are looking to keep that momentum going in the 2025 class after Steve Wiltfong entered a forecast for TTU to land elite EDGE Smith Orogbo.

According to On3, Orogbo is listed as the No. 26 overall recruit in the 2025 class and the No. 3 EDGE player in the cycle.

Listed at 6-foot-4, 210 pounds, Orogbo is a consensus four-star player, meaning he’s rated as a four-star prospect by all major players in the recruiting industry—On3, 247Sports, ESPN, and Rivals.

The elite defender out of Houston (TX) is fresh off a visit to Lubbock and has a 77.8% chance of landing with the Red Raiders, according to On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine.

Thus far, Orogbo has completed official visits to Washington, SMU, and Texas Tech and still has visits scheduled with Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas over the next couple of weeks.

Texas Tech currently has 13 commits in its 2025 class, three of which are four-star prospects, according to On3.

As of right now, Stephenville’s (TX) Tristian Gentry is the No. 40 WR in the class (No. 274 OVR), Hitchcock’s (TX) Lloyd Jones is the No. 11 QB in the class (No. 136 OVR), and Mineral Wells’ (TX) Preztynn Harrison is the No. 16 TE in the class (272 OVR).

That gives Texas Tech the No. 29 overall class in the country—and the fourth-ranked class in the Big 12—as things stand. However, should a player of Orogbo’s status come aboard, there will be a significant jump in the rankings for McGuire’s squad.
