Jeff Goodman on Lakers Coaching Vacancy: ‘I Would Target Bill Self’

NCAA Basketball: Fort Hays State at Kansas

After failing to agree on a deal with UConn head coach Danny Hurley, many in the worldwide college basketball community are calling for the next man up to accept the job in LA.

On Tuesday, the Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman suggested that the Lakers should target Kansas‘ Bill Self as their next head coach.

“If I’m Rob Pelinka and going after another college coach, it would be Bill Self,” Goodman said. “I’m not sure he would do it, but I think he brings a combination of high-level coaching and adaptable personality that could succeed in the NBA.”

While the allure of coaching at the highest level in all of basketball is compelling, it would likely be a tough task to get Bill Self out of Lawrence. The Jayhawks head coach has graced the Jayhawks sideline since 2003.

Names like JJ Reddick, Jay Wright, and more have been floated as potential names to watch in the coaching search, but should the Lakers ownership be set on taking a coach from the college level, Self definitely fits the description.

ESPN’s Brian Windhorst spoke on the situation saying, “Going for Hurley was a stunner and aggressive, but it also told a deeper story: The Lakers weren’t in love with the other available candidates. They might keep looking outside the box, perhaps even for another college coach, now that their willingness to enter that market has become transparent.”

Should the outside-of-the-box candidate be Bill Self, the college basketball coaching carousel would be back in full spin.
