Look: Social Media Reacts to the Death of Jerry West

NCAA Basketball: Oklahoma at West Virginia

One of basketball’s all-time legends, Jerry West, has died at the age of 86. West literally personified the NBA, unofficially representing the league’s logo since 1969, and his laundry list of accolades speaks for itself.

A 14-time NBA All-Star and 8X NBA Champion as an executive, West is easily one of the most decorated people associated with the NBA and will be sorely missed. His death comes just two weeks after fellow NBA legend Bill Walton lost a prolonged battle with cancer.

West’s death has already reverberated around the world, and social media’s reaction is just one way to feel his immense impact on the sport of basketball.

Mike Greenburg delivered one of the best impromptu eulogies that you’ll ever see when announcing West’s death on Wednesday morning.

Michael Jordan reached out to Stephen A. Smith with a heartfelt text message to read on-air, calling West a “friend and a mentor” to the best basketball player who ever lived.

West was a two-time All-American at West Virginia (1959-60) and led the Mountaineers in all three seasons he spent in Morgantown.

Here is a list of reactions to the news from all over the world on X (formerly known as Twitter).
