On3’s Andy Staples Says He Would Buy Stock in UCF

In a recent YouTube video with Heartland College Sports’ Pete Mundo, On3’s Andy Staples discussed which of the four 2023 Big 12 expansion teams he would purchase stock in for the future.

Staples quickly answered in favor of the UCF Knights, and after an impressive recruiting run through both the high school ranks and in the transfer portal, Staples’ shares in UCF could take off in the very near future.

“UCF, absolutely UCF,” Staples said. “I talked to Gus Malzahn about last season when I was down there a few months ago, and he’s still fuming that they finished under .500. He’s never finished under .500 as a head coach in his life.”

While the Knights may not have had the season Gus Malzahn envisioned in Year One as members of the Big 12, UCF has been on an incredible recruiting tear this offseason that could help the unit compete for a title in 2024. The Knights boast the nation’s 34th-best recruiting class and the 22nd-ranked transfer class, which both rank inside the Top 3 among Big 12 Conference members.

“They did a great job of retention,” Staples continued. “They kept RJ Harvey, a 1400-yard rusher, who I think quite a lot of other schools would have been interested in, but they kept him. They bring in KJ Jefferson who had some good years at Arkansas. Gus wanted KJ Jefferson, and KJ Jefferson wanted to play for Gus at Auburn, but that was the year that Bo Nix came out. Now, these two finally get to work together. I think they could be really good year in and year out in the Big 12.”

UCF will have a chance to get back on course in 2024 when they kick the season off against New Hampshire on Thursday, August 29th.
