Several people were injured, one seriously, when stray fireworks shot into the crowd during the national anthem at an annual Independence Day celebration in Provo, Utah.

The “Stadium of Fire” celebration is held every year at LaVell Edwards Stadium, BYU’s football stadium, but suffered delays on Thursday night as six people were taken to the hospital as a result of several out-of-control firework projectiles flew into the crowd.

The errant fireworks were launched at the conclusion of the “Star-Spangled Banner” with a group of American F-35 jets performing a flyover out of Utah’s Hill Air Force Base.

Because of the timing of the incident, there were several angles captured on video.

Emory Cook, a spokesperson for the event, issued a statement to after the incident.

Safety is of the upmost importance to us. All pyrotechnics are thoroughly checked before the show, and were rechecked after the incident. Our thoughts are with those who are impacted by the incident and we are following up with them to make sure they are okay.”

The show, highlighted by a performance from the Jonas Brothers, was delayed for about 10 to 15 minutes while emergency personnel responded to the scene and resumed just before 9 p.m. MT.
