After stating on national television that Shedeur Sanders, Travis Hunter, and Colorado Football “do not matter” ESPN’s Paul Finebaum has quickly taken some heat for his comments.
Former quarterback turned personality Robert Griffin III pushed back on Finebaum’s comments shortly after delivering them and mentioned the national relevance and importance of the Buffaloes.
In a live episode of ESPN’s First Take, Finebaum trashed Colorado’s program, saying, “Shedeur, you are not [everyone’s Super Bowl]. You are an easy win nowadays. You got off to a phenomenal start last year, beating a couple of mediocre teams that had big names. And quite frankly, you haven’t done anything since other than crash and burn. I know that the media loves this story. We fall all over ourselves. But Colorado isn’t important in college football. Deion Sanders is. He’s a stand-alone person. He’s one of the most charismatic people we’ve ever seen. But Colorado is nothing. They don’t matter. They’re irrelevant in the big picture of college football.”
“Colorado is everybody’s Super Bowl because all eyes are on them,” Griffin said. “The reason that they are the Super Bowl is because all eyes are on them. I still remember Dan Lanning telling his locker room that Colorado was there for clicks, and they’re there for wins. They knew, and they went out there with a vengeance, and they did blow them out, but they played harder in that game than they played in any other game of the season.”
Finebaum’s comments stemmed from Shedeur Sanders labeling Colorado everybody’s Super Bowl at Big 12 Media Days in Las Vegas, which sent the internet into a frenzy. Finebaum was the latest on a long list of college football personalities to bash Sanders over the statement, which prompted Griffin to stand up for CU.
Griffin finished his thoughts by saying, “So Paul, yes, people do know Deion, but it’s also because he is a great coach and a Hall of Fame corner. But you know his players, and what he is doing in the portal is bringing in guys who have like-minded players to him and what he wants to accomplish.”
Sanders and the Buffaloes will have the opportunity to prove Finebaum wrong and RG3 right in the fall when their season kicks off on Thursday, August 29th, against the North Dakota State Bison.
