Utah starting quarterback Cam Rising is a game-time decision for Saturday’s game with the Arizona Wildcats, reports ESPN.
The No. 10 Utes (4-0, 1-0 in Big 12) will host the Wildcats (2-1) in the latter’s conference opener at Rice-Eccles Stadium at 9:15 p.m. central.
Rising, a sixth-year collegiate, will be evaluated pre-game, which will include a throwing session. Spin and velocity on the throws will determine whether he plays.
Last week against Oklahoma State he went through pre-game and it was determined he didn’t have the velocity on his throws to play.
If he cannot play, true freshman Isaac Wilson will start his third straight game.
He threw for 207 yards on 17-of-29 passing against Oklahoma State, along with two interceptions. In his first start against Utah State he threw for 239 yards and three touchdowns.
Rising hurt his throwing hand in the season’s second game against Baylor as he was tackled into a hydration station by a pair of Bears defenders near the end of the first half.
He injured a finger and and was taken to the locker room for further examination before halftime. He returned in street clothes with the finger bandaged up as Wilson finished out the game.
Rising has thrown for 346 yards and seven touchdowns in six quarters of action this season.
Injuries are something Rising has dealt with throughout his career, which is part of the reason he’s in his sixth year of college football. He missed all of last season due to an injury. Before that, he had two great seasons for the Utes, including 3,034 passing yards, 26 touchdowns and eight interceptions in 2022.
