Following an exciting slate of games in the Big 12 Conference this week, four quarterbacks from the league were listed among the Top 10 PFF-graded signal callers in Week 5.
The four quarterbacks mentioned were headlined by BYU’s Jake Retzlaff, followed by Texas Tech’s Behren Morton, Cincinnati’s Brendan Sorsby, and Kansas State’s Avery Johnson.
Junior quarterback Jake Retzlaff has been a major factor in BYU, starting with a 5-0 record in 2024. The California native threw for 216 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions in the Cougars’ 34-28 win over Baylor in Week 5. The game brought his season total to 1,206 yards through the air, 156 yards on the ground, and a touchdown to interception ratio of 11-5. He has also been relatively productive with his legs for BYU, finding the end zone four times this fall in the ground game.
Texas Tech’s Behren Morton outdueled the third-ranked Big 12 QB on the list in Week 5, taking down Brendan Sorsby and the Cincinnati Bearcats. The Red Raiders’ gunslinger tossed 251 yards and two scores through the air, which helped continue his dominant start. Morton now sits at No. 12 nationally with 1,426 passing yards and a touchdown to interception ratio of 14-2.
While he may have wound up losing his matchup in Week 5, Cincinnati’s Brendan Sorsby continued to be a revelation for Scott Satterfield’s team. He threw a career-high 426 yards through the air alongside four passing touchdowns and an interception. Sorsby’s 1,481 passing yards currently hold the nation’s No. 8 spot.
The fourth and final passer listed by PFF College was Kansas State’s rising star Avery Johnson, who took home Big 12 Player of the Week honors with his performance. Johnson accounted for five total touchdowns in the Wildcats’ 42-20 blowout over then-ranked No. 20 Oklahoma State, with three scores through the air and two on the ground. With his impressive 256-yard day through the air, Johnson became the lone league member to have thrown for 800+ yards and ran for 300+ this season.
