Following a disastrous start to the 2024 season with a 0-3 record in Big 12 conference play, Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy is under some pressure to make changes.
After the Cowboys’ 38-14 loss to West Virginia, Gundy was asked about the possibility of making a quarterback change and gave a non-committal answer.
“I don’t want to get out in front of that,” Gundy said. “We need to look and evaluate.”
This season, Gundy’s Cowboys have rallied around veteran quarterback Alan Bowman, who has had some up-and-down moments. In 2024, Bowman has thrown for a good chunk of yardage but hasn’t done a good job of taking care of the football. Bowman has completed 117 passes for 1,537 yards and a touchdown-to-interception ratio of 11-6.
Behind Bowman, Oklahoma State fans have seen just one other quarterback under center in sophomore signal-caller Garret Rangel. The Texas native has seen limited snaps in relief of Bowman, going 7-19 for 66 yards on the season.
The third quarterback whose name has surfaced among disappointed fans this season has been none other than true freshman Zane Flores, who committed to Oklahoma State in the Class of 2023. Flores, a 6-foot-4 prospect from Nebraska, was listed as a three-star prospect by the 247Sports index. He also checked in as the nation’s 481st-ranked prospect, the 27th-ranked quarterback, and the second-ranked player in the state of Nebraska.
Fortunately for Mike Gundy’s group, the Cowboys have the week off to figure out what direction the team will be heading in coming Week 8.
