Amid yet another injury setback for Utah quarterback Cam Rising, head coach Kyle Whittingham provided an interesting update about the health of his star signal caller.

On Monday, Whittingham mentioned that there is a point in the season where the team would turn the job over to true freshman Isaac Wilson for good and shut down Rising for the year.

As KSL’s Josh Furlong noted, “Whittingham said there is a point in the season where they would just turn the starting job over to Isaac Wilson if Cam Rising weren’t available. Said he won’t publicly say when that time would be, but there is a possibility that could be the case if Cam isn’t ready.”

Rising has yet to return to action after suffering an injury back in Week 2 vs. Baylor. The California native collided with an object on the sideline after running out of bounds, which led to an injury on his throwing hand. Prior to the injury, Rising looked like his old self, throwing for seven touchdowns in less than two full games.

In his absence, the team turned to the younger brother of Denver Broncos quarterback Zack Wilson, true freshman Isaac Wilson, to lead the team into conference play. Wilson has been serviceable in relief of Rising, throwing for more than 800 yards, but does have a bit of a turnover issue with a touchdown to interception ratio of 6-7.

While Kyle Whittingham and Cam Rising may be the only two people who know an accurate timeline for a potential return to action, the Utes will have to find a way to compete in the meantime. No. 16 Utah takes on Arizona State in Tempe in Week 7 on Friday, October 11th, at 9:30 p.m. CT.
