With pessimism rising regarding the status of Cam Rising for the remainder of the season, on Thursday, Utah fans were put to ease with an update from the ActionNetwork’s Brett McMurphy.
McMurphy noted that the Utes’ signal caller will make his return in Week 7, on the road against the Arizona State Sun Devils.
“Utah QB Cam Rising will start Friday at Arizona State,” McMurphy said. “Rising hasn’t played since Sept. 7 vs. Baylor, when he injured the ring finger on his throwing hand, requiring stitches. Rising has missed Utah’s last three games.”
Rising’s return stems from an injury suffered in Week 2 vs. Baylor. The California native collided with an object on the sideline after running out of bounds, which led to an injury on his throwing hand. Prior to the injury, Rising looked like his old self, throwing for seven touchdowns in less than two full games.
In his absence, the team turned to the younger brother of Denver Broncos quarterback Zack Wilson, true freshman Isaac Wilson, to lead the team into conference play. Wilson has been serviceable in relief of Rising, throwing for more than 800 yards, but does have a bit of a turnover issue with a touchdown to interception ratio of 6-7.
The freshman passer led Utah to a 2-1 record as a starter with wins over Utah State and Oklahoma State and a loss to Arizona. Rising is set to return on Friday, October 11th, at 9:30 p.m. CT, when No. 16 Utah takes on Arizona State in Tempe in Week 7.
