Does Deion Sanders Expect to Compete for a Big 12 Title?

Oct 7, 2023; Tempe, Arizona, USA; Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders walks the sidelines as his team takes on the ASU Sun Devils at Mountain America Stadium.

Colorado has matched its win total from a season ago through five games and is sitting at 4-1 after their first bye week. The Buffaloes are 2-0 in Big 12 play, and their most recent win came in the form of a 48-21 beatdown of UCF — favored by over two touchdowns — on the road.

As one of just five teams undefeated in conference play heading into Week 7, Colorado is in prime position to make a run that nobody expected was possible — that is, nobody outside of the Champions Center at Folsom Field.

Head coach Deion Sanders was asked about being in the Big 12 title hunt ahead of the Buffaloes’ massive game against Kansas State this weekend. Coach Prime says that, while it’s a surprise to everyone else, that’s been the expectation for everyone in his locker room.

“We expect that,” Sanders said on competing for the Big 12 title. “Some of us are still upset about the Nebraska game. We wish we had that right now because we feel like we weren’t where we are then where we are now. We really expect that. It’s not being cocky, anything like that. It’s what we expect.”

There are certainly still those who doubt Colorado’s legitimacy as a contender, but one look at the line for this weekend’s game will tell the story of how far this team’s stock has risen over the last month.

Kansas State, the No. 18 team in the country, is just a 3.5-point favorite over Colorado on Saturday and has just a 52.3% chance of winning the game, according to ESPN’s matchup predictor.

K-State vs. Colorado is scheduled to kick off at 9:15 p.m. CT, with coverage provided by ESPN.
