Following another incredible “Big 12 After Dark” game on Saturday night, Colorado head coach Deion Sanders kept it real when discussing the play of his son Shilo during his Week 7 return.
Sanders had been sidelined with a broken forearm in the weeks before the 31-28 loss, which prompted the Buffaloes head coach to give a brutally honest answer regarding Shilo’s performance.
“I thought he played horrible,” Sanders said. “I thought he was rusty and didn’t have his footing. I thought he was coming down trying to make a play, but open field one-on-one tackling with that kind of back [DJ Giddens], it ain’t an easy task, but he’s gonna do better. I know what he has in him.”
While Sanders and the Colorado defense hadn’t given up 100 yards to a rusher or receiver through the first six weeks, that narrative changed on Saturday night. Kansas State running back DJ Giddens was unstoppable vs. Colorado, recording 25 carries for 182 yards on the ground. He also added a pair of grabs for 38 yards through the air.
One viral play highlighting some of Sanders’ rust in his return showed up on film with Giddens shaking the Buffaloes’ starting safety and leaving him in the dust for a big highlight.
Despite dropping the game to Kansas State, the Buffaloes remain in the hunt for a Big 12 title with a 2-1 conference record. Colorado takes the field next in Week 8 vs. the Arizona Wildcats on Saturday, October 19th, at 3:00 p.m. CT.
