The 2024 college football season has not exactly been kind to Neal Brown and the West Virginia Mountaineers, as their performance this season has generated immense blowback.
When asked how to keep fan support up despite a disappointing start, Brown provided a quote that perked some ears among Mountaineers fans at a recent press conference.
“I get that they want to win, but what I would say is, ‘Did they have a good time?’ Did they enjoy it?” Brown asked. “It was a pretty good atmosphere, and I’m assuming they probably had a pretty good time tailgating. If they’re in the deal for enjoyment, then I would come back.”
The comments earned some negative press from Mountaineers fans, and after after a 3-3 start with several lapses in play, the concern is notable. Despite having three loses on the resume however, Neal Brown’s squad is right in the thick of the race toward Arlington with a 2-1 conference record.
“I looked at the weather, and it’s going to be nice again,” Brown added. “It’s a night game, and we need them to provide a home-field advantage. I get they’re frustrated that we didn’t win. We played a tough schedule that beat us and hasn’t lost. But that’s not an excuse, that’s just the truth.”
Brown finished his thoughts by saying, “It was an entertaining football game. If you’re a football fan and you’re just watching that, it’s pretty entertaining. We just didn’t play well enough to win. I hope with that in mind they will come back for another entertaining game, and hopefully, we can play better at the end and win.”
Brown’s squad clashes with another 2-1 team in Week 8 with a date set for No. 17 Kansas State to come to town. The matchup between Chris Klieman’s Wildcats and Neal Brown’s Mountaineers kicks off on Saturday, October 19th, at 6:30 p.m. CT.
