Utah football has announced on Monday that starting quarterback Cam Rising suffered a season-ending injury in last week’s loss to Arizona State.
Earlier on Monday, it was reported that Rising would be out indefinitely, but then came a statement from head coach Kyle Whittingham later in the day saying, “Upon further evaluation by our medical staff, Cameron Rising’s injury has unfortunately been deemed season-ending. During his time at Utah, Cam has been both a great player and leader for our program, and he will obviously be missed. Any future developments concerning his collegiate eligibility will be addressed at a later date.”
Now, the program will turn to Isaac Wilson at quarterback. Wilson has started three games in 2024, throwing for 830 yards and six touchdowns while completing 55.7% of his attempts. The biggest issue that the freshman has faced, unfortunately, is that he’s thrown seven interceptions on the year, including two in each of the last two games.
After injuring his throwing hand against Baylor, Rising was forced to miss the next three games before returning against Arizona State last week. However, the seventh-year senior did not look anything like his former self, throwing for 299 yards and three interceptions in a 27-19 loss on Friday night.
Since he’s appeared in just three games so far this season, Rising would be eligible to return for an eighth year of college football in 2025, should he request a medical waiver to do so.
Back in July, at Big 12 Football Media Days, Rising was asked if he planned on trying to play another year in 2025, if given the chance.
At the time, he wasn’t too keen on the idea.
“That’s not the plan,” he said. “seven years is more than enough.”
It will be interesting to see how he handles the situation going forward, but for now, it appears we may’ve seen the last of Rising’s time in college football.
