Coming off a 9-4 campaign in 2023, expectations were rather high for Garrett Greene and the West Virginia Mountaineers this season.
Despite a tough slate, folks in Morgantown felt that this team could make a run at a Big 12 Championship with everything that was coming back — particularly the return of senior quarterback Garrett Greene.
Unfortunately, things haven’t gotten off to a great start in 2024. The Mountaineers are 3-3 and have losses to rivals Penn State and Pitt, and now a 28-16 loss to Iowa State this past weekend.
West Virginia has a very passionate fan base, and most are incredibly supportive of the Mountaineers — win or loss.
However, as with all fanbases, there is a vocal minority that takes things too far. According to a since deleted tweet from Garrett Greene’s mother, Blake Greene, her family has had to deal with some rather unfortunate circumstances since her son has been at WVU.
With Greene being the starting quarterback for the Mountaineers, he is the first player to receive criticism any time that West Virginia struggles on the field. Unfortunately, that’s been the case through six games, and Greene hasn’t been immune to inconsistencies.
Heading into Week 8, Greene has completed just 57% of his attempts for 1,267 yards with eight touchdowns and six interceptions, adding 382 yards and three touchdowns on the ground.
In her tweet, Blake Greene thanked Mountaineer fans, but also shared some frustrating details about her family’s life.
“Thanks for your support. A great feeling know that all my son’s hard work just results in now I feel threatened just out and about in West Virginia, a place I have developed such a love for.
“It’s why I am not allowed to wear my son’s name and jersey number, and why I have police escorts sometimes. Crazy.”
As Voice of Morgantown says, it is very disappointing and disheartening to hear from a player’s parent, especially a player like Greene.
