Mike Gundy and the Oklahoma State Cowboys are set to unveil a new quarterback for Friday’s match up with BYU.
The O’Colly first reported that Oklahoma State is moving to Garret Rangel as their starting quarterback. Rangel said, “I’m excited to go out there and just let it all hang next week against BYU.”
Also of note, redshirt freshman Zane Flores will be the back up quarterback ahead of seventh-year quarterback Alan Bowman, who has started the first six games. Rangel has played in a pair of games this season, vs. West Virginia and Utah with mixed results.
Against the Mountaineers, Rangel went 4/5 for 75 yards and a touchdown, while he went 3 of 11 for 31 yards vs. Utah.
Rangel was part of a three-way quarterback competition in 2023 with Bowman and Gunnar Gundy. Bowman ultimately got the nod, but all three quarterbacks played early in the season. During that time, In 2023, Rangel threw for a total of 172 passing yards, two touchdowns and one interception, while completing 51% of his passes.

Rangel was recruited as a four-star quarterback prospect in the Class of 2022, according to the 247Sports composite. He was ranked as the No. 26 quarterback in the country and the No. 60 player in the state of Texas.
He picked Oklahoma State over Utah, Nevada, Northwestern, North Texas, Vanderbilt and several other schools.
The Frisco, Texas native will now have to take on a BYU team that has been one of the best defenses in the entire country so far this season, giving up only 16 points per game and has the most efficient pass defense in the Big 12.
Kick off between Oklahoma State and BYU is set for 9:15 on Friday night in Provo.
