Travis Hunter is one of the biggest names in college football, and there’s plenty of good reasons for that. The uber-talented junior out of Suwanee, GA, starts at both wide receiver and cornerback for the Colorado Buffaloes (4-2) and is regularly seen making highlight-reel plays on both sides of the ball.
Through the first six games of the 2024 season, Hunter has 49 catches for 587 yards and nine touchdowns, plus 16 tackles, three PBUs, one forced fumble, and two interceptions on defense.
Simply put, you won’t find another stat line like his in college football. And while the Heisman Trophy is awarded to the most outstanding football player in the nation, the hype has been around Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty as of late.
Jeanty is currently on pace to break Barry Sanders’ single-season FBS rushing record of 2,628 yards — a record that has stood since the 1988 season. Through the first six games of his season, Jeanty has had 95 carries and leads the nation in rushing yards (1,248), yards per carry (9.9), rushing touchdowns (17) and total touchdowns (18).
Jeanty’s worst game came against Portland State… when he had 11 carries for 127 yards (11.5 ypc).
As impressive as that might be, Hunter argues that he’s still more deserving of the Heisman Trophy, and makes a bold statement to support his case.
“I know I can win it, but I don’t know who’s there,” Hunter told Robert Griffin III on the Outta Pocket Podcast. “I mean y’all see Ashton Jeanty, it’s not like we haven’t seen a running back that’s good. We haven’t seen a player that plays both ways and I’m gonna keep saying that.”
“He have, what, like 95 carries? For 1,000 yards? If I had 95 catches, how much yards you think I’d have?”
Hunter also made his statement for being the No. 1 player to come off the board in the 2025 NFL Draft. In his words, there isn’t anybody out there that can do what he does.
“Tell us why you should be the No. 1 pick in the draft,” RGIII asked, giving Hunter the floor.
“Nobody do what I do. It’s just that simple,” Hunter replied. “I know a lot of people try to hate on me but I been hungry for too long. Nobody can do what I do, and nobody do what I do. Even if they say people can do it, and they talk about the competition, but you see me go out there each and every week and make a play, either offense or defense every time.”
Hunter and the Buffs will be back in action against Arizona this weekend, and Colorado is trying to keep pace in the Big 12 title picture. A win in Tucson would move them to 3-1 in Big 12 play, and it would get them to 5-2 overall, putting them just one win away from making a bowl game.
