The Oklahoma State quarterback situation continues to get more complicated after a report from The Oklahoman revealed that backup signal-caller Zane Flores will not play this season after suffering a lower leg injury that required surgery this week.
According to Robert Allen of Pokes Report, Flores did not make the trip to Provo (UT) for the Pokes’ game against BYU on Friday night after initially being expected to serve as the backup moving forward this season.
It was reported earlier this week that Oklahoma State was making a switch at quarterback, with Alan Bowman going to the bench and redshirt sophomore Garrett Rangel stepping into the spotlight. With Flores now out of the picture, Bowman will serve as Rangel’s backup moving forward.
Rangel was part of a three-way quarterback competition in 2023 with Bowman and Gunnar Gundy. Bowman ultimately got the nod, but all three quarterbacks played early in the season. During that time, In 2023, Rangel threw for a total of 172 passing yards, two touchdowns and one interception, while completing 51% of his passes.
Rangel is in an incredibly tough spot for his first start since the 2023 opener against Central Arkansas, too. A Friday night game at LaVell Edwards Stadium is tough enough on any given year, but tonight he will be up against the the 13th-ranked BYU Cougars (6-0, 3-0).
BYU’s defense has been stifling in 2024, allowing a league-low 4.42 yards per play, and leads the Big 12 with 14 turnovers forced (10 INT, 4 FUM).
