Just as soon as Oklahoma State’s offense turned the page with an explosive day in the box score, the team underwent a key change at the quarterback position with an injury to Garret Rangel.
Rangel, a sophomore quarterback from Texas, stepped in as the starting quarterback vs. BYU and unlocked a new spark in the team before exiting with an injury.
After exploding for a 54-yard run, Rangel suffered an injury that sideline reporter Robert Allen labeled a broken collarbone.
When asked about a return timeline, Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy said, “He’s out. I don’t know, but he’ll be out a while. It’s hard for me to predict.”
With Rangel at the helm, the Cowboys’ offense returned to form, and with the rushing attack, they finally found some success. Rangel’s legs stressed BYU’s defense and allowed the team to post 269 yards on the ground.
“Quarterback run game allows Ollie [Gordon] to free up a little more because now they have to play everybody involved,” Gundy continued. “So, I thought the plan was good, and I thought he was good rushing the ball. It is just an unfortunate incident.”
With the loss to BYU, Oklahoma State now sits comfortably alone at 0-4, last in the Big 12 Conference.
