Postscripts: Big 12 After Dark is the Best

NCAA Football: Texas Christian at Utah

What’s going on in the Big 12 and beyond? I expand and explain every Sunday in Postscripts at Heartland College Sports, your home for independent Big 12 coverage.

This week, Big 12 After Dark rocks, Cincinnati may be about to get a reality check, how Tony Bennett’s retirement impacts the Big 12 and more.

Big 12 After Dark Rules

One of the things that conference expansion brought us is Big 12 After Dark. Between BYU and the Four Corners schools, we’re getting a treat with late-night football — if you’re into that.

The latest episode was Friday night in Provo. BYU was hosting Oklahoma State. The Cowboys were winless in three league games and really had nothing realistic to play for. The Cowboys lost their starting quarterback Garret Rangel to an injury and had to turn back to veteran Alan Bowman.

And, yet, the Oklahoma State Cowboys had the lead by four points with less than two minutes. BYU had to go the length of the field to score a touchdown to win the game and keep their dream season alive.

You may not have been up for it. I was (barely). And, man, that was something.

If you like making connections to the past, BYU won its only national championship in football 40 years ago. I’m just saying.

Bearcats are Back?

Cincinnati is a three-point loss to Texas Tech away from being undefeated in Big 12 play. Let that sink in a bit. The Bearcats took care of Arizona State on Saturday, 24-14. I’m not sure anyone had that on their Big 12 bingo card going into the season.

Well, things are about to get tough for the Bearcats. The next four games are against Colorado, West Virginia, Iowa State and Kansas State.

I’m not certain if the Bearcats can keep this up, but they certainly have a chance to play spoiler in this Big 12 race if they’re not able to.

Kansas Olympics

In conjunction with Late Night at the Phog the Kansas social media team put together their own sort of Olympics for the basketball team, with commentary from coach Bill Self.

The fun part about this is that I don’t see a single player that will play a meaningful role with the team in this video. It’s like Bill said, “Yeah, you can do that but not with Hunter, A.J., etc…” Which is the proper call if you’re the No. 1 team in the country.
