On Monday night, Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy confirmed that quarterback Garrett Rangel — who made his first start of the season against BYU — will miss the remainder of the year after suffering a broken collarbone that requires surgery.

As first reported by Tulsa World’s Tyler Waldrep, Rangel will undergo surgery on Tuesday to repair the injury.

Rangel is the second quarterback that Oklahoma State has last for the season in the last two weeks after backup Zane Flores was ruled out last week after season-ending surgery.

Rangel suffered his injury at the end of a 54-yard run and appeared to have a major impact on the Cowboys’ offensive output, sparking the run game for a season-high 269 rushing yards in the 38-35 loss.

Gundy spoke about Rangel’s injury and a conversation he had with the sophomore signal-caller.

“If you get hit from behind going down, especially running, you’re in a vulnerable position,” Gundy said. “And that is what happened to him. And we talked about it. I talked to him today a little bit about it, that you almost, when you can feel them getting close to you, you’re almost better off as a quarterback to slide to the side and not let the 250 pounds crunch on your body.”

Oklahoma State will have to move on without Rangel now, though, which means it will be Alan Bowman back under center for the Pokes.

Bowman has struggled in 2024, completing just 59.2% of his attempts for 1,738 yards and 13 touchdowns with nine interceptions. Oklahoma State is back in action on Saturday, when the Cowboys head to Waco to take on the Baylor Bears.

Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 on Saturday, with coverage provided on ESPN+.
