One major topic from the Sunflower Showdown matchup between Kansas and Kansas State each year revolves around chants from the student section.
One particular chant caught the eye of Kansas State head basketball coach Jerome Tang for its derogatory nature.
As shown in the video, Kansas State fans can be heard chanting “F*** KU” instead of the normal KSU chant.
The video from Trog Leroy on X caught some steam on the social media app, which brought in a response from Tang on the situation. The Wildcats head coach responded to the caption “Sorry, Coach Tang, but today is the exception” with a gif that reads “Do not want.”
Tang’s effort to shut down the chant has been primarily met with widespread praise as the fanbase quickly made the change to pivot from the chant. With the Sunflower Showdown, however, fans tend to go back to their old ways with an in-state rival on the horizon.
The Wildcats enter the game as 10-point favorites over the Jayhawks in a highly anticipated matchup. While Kansas hasn’t lived up to preseason expectations this fall, the game still holds major playoff implications.
While Jerome Tang and the majority of Kansas State fans may feel a certain way about the chant directed at their rival, it’s safe to say Saturday’s tweet likely won’t be the last time Tang has to release a statement on the tradition.
