It’s no secret that Mike Gundy and the Oklahoma State Cowboys have struggled at the quarterback position this season.
Ahead of the Cowboys’ Week 10 matchup with Arizona State, Gundy discussed the possibility of fans seeing a new signal caller enter the game.
The player in consideration for playing time is true freshman Maealiuaki Smith, who Gundy openly said may not be ready for the moment.
“Right now, no,” Mike Gundy said. “Just to put him in? No. We’re not in that position right now. If something happens to Bowman, he’ll be in, but he’s not in a position now — I mean, he’s running and getting work, and if he went in, I think he would function fine, but there’s more to it than just throwing him out there.”
Coming out of Junipero Serra High School in the Class of 2024, Smith was listed as a three-star prospect and the nation’s 547th-ranked player by the 247Sports index. He also checked in as the 32nd-ranked player at his position and the 40th-ranked player in the state of California.
Ahead of Smith, Oklahoma State fans have seen both Alan Bowman and Garret Rangel under center this fall. Unfortunately, the team has had to overcome season-ending injuries to Rangel and fellow OSU quarterback Zane Flores.
While fans may not see Smith enter the football game unless something major occurs, the possibility of a fourth quarterback hitting the field this fall is never out of the question.
