The BYU Cougars have been one of the best stories in college football through the first nine weeks of the 2024 season.
To this point, Kalani Sitake’s group has navigated a tricky schedule without finding a single pitfall, taking an 8-0 record into the month of November.
It hasn’t always been dominant, and sometimes it wasn’t even pretty. Nonetheless, the Cougs are undefeated and have felt like a team that just continues to will themselves to victory.
The Cougars have a manageable remaining schedule after their bye this week, too, with games at Utah and Arizona State, and two home games against Kansas and Houston.
Should BYU get to the end of the regular season and finish 12-0, they’re likely a lock to make the College Football Playoff, even if they lost the Big 12 Championship game. They wouldn’t be the first Big 12 team to do that.
In fact, FOX Sports’ Joel Klatt says that this 2024 BYU team reminds him of the last team we saw run the Big 12 gauntlet without taking a regular-season loss — the 2022 TCU Horned Frogs.
“I’m just starting to really believe in this BYU team,” Klatt said. “This BYU team smells and feels a lot like two years ago with the TCU team. A similar rugged and competitive style quarterback, a veteran defense, some transfers in the right areas. Winning games in all sorts of fashions, whether it’s getting turnovers, winning with special teams, winning with offense, winning with defense. They’ve done it every single different way.
“I just think BYU is somewhat of a team of destiny.”
Is BYU a team of destiny? It sure feels like it, considering how the team has performed to this point, and if they run the table without taking a loss, it’ll be hard to argue that sentiment.
