Fact or Fiction: UCF Will Fire Gus Malzahn Before the End of the 2024 Season

NCAA Football: Villanova at Central Florida

Welcome to Fact or Fiction Friday. Each Friday, I allow our Facebook and message board fans to ask the most intriguing questions in the Big 12, and I will tell you whether they come true or are set to fail.

Now, let’s crack open this week’s list and see what we have in store.

Oklahoma State Finishes 6-6 To Keep The Bowl Streak Alive

Fiction: While I did pick the Cowboys to upset the Sun Devils this weekend, there is no way they are going to get to six wins. Right now, Oklahoma State is sitting at 3-5 with four games remaining against Arizona State, TCU, Texas Tech, and Colorado. A win this weekend would go a long way, but they would still have to win two of their final three games just to go 6-6. With the way this team is playing defensively (dead last in run defense in the Big 12), there is no chance of that happening. I hate to say it, but the bowl streak will end this season.

Texas Tech Beats Iowa State This Weekend

Fiction: There are just too many question marks for the Red Raiders heading into this weekend. First off, Behren Morton’s health is a concern for me. I know he will be questionable for the game on Saturday, but after seeing him in a sling last weekend, how healthy would he actually be if he gives it a go? If he doesn’t play, then Will Hammond will be the guy, and while he is talented, he is still just a true freshman. That could be a disaster for Texas Tech on the road playing against a John Heacock-coached defense.

Also, Texas Tech has the worst passing defense, not just in the Big 12 but also in the entire country. Iowa State has the weapons around Rocco Becht to take advantage of that, and with this game being in Ames, I am taking the Cyclones.

TCU Beats Baylor This Weekend

Fact: I know Baylor has looked a lot better over their last two games, but I am not ready to jump on the train just yet. Offensively, they have run the ball for nearly 600 yards in the last two weeks, and Sawyer Robertson has been on fire. But TCU is the better team. I like their weapons more, and Josh Hoover is an excellent quarterback when he takes care of the football. To me, TCU is the better team, and they are going to prove that on Saturday. Give me the Horned Frogs in this one, and will someone please get rid of that ugly Bluebonnet Battle trophy?

UCF Will Fire Gus Malzahn

Fiction: Before I say why it’s fiction, let me start by saying if UCF doesn’t make a bowl game this season, then he should be fired. He went 3-6 last season in conference play and is staring down a 2-7 season this year in Big 12 action. That simply isn’t good enough for a program like UCF, which has all the resources to be successful in this conference. He fired defensive coordinator Ted Roof just eight games into the year, and it was a questionable hire to begin with. He also relieved himself of play-calling duties. That means the next person to go is him. With all that said, UCF will probably give him at least one more year because if they fire him before December, then they would have to pay him a lot. Gus still has over $13 million left on his contract, so I believe they will give him another chance in 2025 with his seat on fire.

Candy Corn Is The Worst Halloween Candy

Fiction: I am writing this on Halloween, so this is the perfect time to ask this question. As someone who has had a rough week on social media with my candy takes, I hope that I can help clear some things up. Candy Corn is delicious, and it is not the worst candy. To me, the worst candy is black licorice or anything with peanut butter in it. Yes, that’s right, I hate Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. So, what? My favorite candy? DOTS. And for all those who hate DOTS, I dare you to try them and tell me you don’t love them. TEAM DOTS FOREVER!
