After Texas Tech upset Iowa State on Saturday with a 23-22 victory, it was announced on Saturday night that Colorado vs. Texas Tech will air on FOX with a 4:00 p.m. ET/3:00 p.m. CT kick off in Lubbock, Texas.
Texas Tech’s upset of Iowa State puts the Red Raiders in the thick of the Big 12 Championship race at 4-2, while also opening up a much bigger door for the Colorado Buffaloes to potentially end up in Arlington in early December.
Colorado is on a bye week in Week 10, but at 4-1 in the Big 12, is tied for second place with Iowa State, one game behind 5-0 BYU. Also, Houston’s upset of Kansas State moves Colorado up in the standings, with the Wildcats falling to 4-2 in league play.
Both outcomes were a perfect set up for this game in Lubbock to receive a premier spot on television in Week 11.
Colorado vs. Texas Tech History
The two programs have met 10 times all-time and have a tied record at 5-5. The last time Colorado played Texas Tech was the last time Colorado was in the Big 12. Texas Tech won in Boulder 27-24 in 2010, when Tommy Tuberville was the head coach of the Red Raiders and Dan Hawkins was leading the Buffaloes.
The first-ever meeting came in 1962 when Texas Tech won 21-12. Then, they didn’t meet again until 1976 when the Red Raiders won, before the Buffaloes took the next meeting in 1981. There was a 17-year gap until 1998. The two programs only played seven times as Big 12 members because the Red Raiders were in the Big 12 South, and Colorado was in the Big 12 North, so they did not meet on an annual basis.
But now, the two teams are back at in 14 years after their last meeting, with the game essentially being an elimination game in the Big 12 race.
