On Friday night, there was an AAC showdown between Florida Atlantic and South Florida, and the biggest story game in the postgame.
The Bulls had rolled to a win over the Owls 44-21 and the post-game handshake between FAU head coach Tom Herman and USF head coach Alex Golesh was brief, to say the least. And apparently it didn’t sit well with Herman.
What’s the back story here? As Brett McMurphy noted on X late on Friday night, Herman kicked an onside kick last year vs. FAU while winning 56-14. And then on Friday night, Golesh returned the favor and went for a two-point conversation when leading 44-21.

These two actually coach against each other, albeit at different levels, while in the Big 12. Tom Herman was the head coach for the Texas Longhorns from 2017 to 2020 before he ended up getting fired. Alex Golesh was the tight ends coach at Iowa State from 2016 to 2019.
Golesh has the Bulls at 4-4 on the season and 2-2 in AAC play, while Herman and the Owls are struggling this season at 2-6 overall and 0-4 in the AAC. Both coaches are in Year 2 with their respective programs. Last year, Herman and the Owls went 4-8 overall and 3-5 in league play, while Golesh and the Bulls were 7-6 overall and 4-4 in conference play.
Next week, South Florida is home to take on Navy, while Florida Atlantic travels to play East Carolina on Thursday night.
