While offseason additions are usually always exciting when they occur, the reality of the situation is that some athletes will not see the court.
That appears to be the case for four different Big 12 athletes this season across three different programs that have reported redshirt plans for key basketball players.
That is the case for select players from Kansas, West Virginia, and TCU, namely Jamari McDowell, RJ Jones, Ashton Simmons, and Ofri Naveh.
Bill Self and Jamie Dixon announced that their athletes would red shirt, but in the case of Naveh, the Israeli native announced his intentions in a social media post.
“After careful consideration, I have decided to redshirt this season,” Naveh said. “This decision, which was made prior to our game last night, is one I believe will be the right step for my development and future. I love WVU and feel incredibly grateful to be a part of this team. Though I won’t be on the court, I’m fully committed to working hard, pushing my teammates, and supporting our program in every way I can. I’ll continue to challenge myself and the guys at practice, preparing us all to make this season special. Thank you for your support.”
While redshirting doesn’t always lead to player retention in the modern era of college basketball, if the four athletes above choose to remain with their current program, the future will be bright after a full year of practice and work.
