The first College Football Playoff Top 25 for 2024 was released on Tuesday night, and there are four Big 12 schools inside the initial rankings.
This season will introduce the first-ever 12-team College Football Playoff format, which will include each of the five highest-ranked conference champions and seven at-large teams.
Here’s a look at the first poll of the year, courtesy of the College Football Playoff committee.
As expected, BYU (8-0) is the highest-ranked team from the conference, coming in at No. 9 ahead of their matchup with Utah this weekend. Kalani Sitake and the Cougars appear to be the Big 12’s best hope of securing a first-round bye, and with a manageable schedule the rest of the way, they are in position to do just that.
Iowa State (7-1) is the next Big 12 team to show up in the rankings, coming in at No. 17 after suffering their first loss of the year last week against Texas Tech. The Cyclones will hope to get back in the win column this week when they head to Kansas City to take on Kansas (2-6).
Kansas State (7-2) just dropped its second game of the season against Houston (4-5) but didn’t fall too far from their AP poll ranking last week, coming in at No. 19 in the initial CFP rankings.
Finally, Colorado (6-2) checks in at No. 20, up one spot from their AP ranking (No. 21) ahead of a pivotal matchup against Texas Tech this weekend.
