The month of November brings many things in the world of college sports. College football, the start of college basketball begins and then of course we get the College Football Playoff rankings every Tuesday night.
There have been plenty of head scratching moments from the playoff committee on a weekly basis so I thought it would be fun to share my three thoughts on this week’s playoff rankings. Here are the Big 12 teams who made the rankings.
#9 BYU
#17 Iowa State
#19 Kansas State
#21 Colorado
BYU Got Screwed
The Cougars were ranked ninth on Tuesday night and what a crock of you know what that is. BYU is sitting at 8-0 on top of the Big 12 standings, yet the playoff committee put three one-loss SEC teams in front them and two one-loss Big Ten schools in front of them as well. It makes absolutely zero sense to me. Plus, Indiana was ranked one spot ahead of them as well, despite not having a single Top 25 win. Meanwhile, BYU has a Top 15 win on the road against SMU. Texas, Penn State, and Tennessee are all schools with one loss, and none of those schools have a single Top 25 win.
The fact that those three schools are ranked ahead of BYU just shows the favoritism of the committee when it comes to the Big Ten and SEC. Those schools have no business being in front of an undefeated Big 12 team.
Get Ready For Plenty of SEC and Big Ten Teams
After the rankings were released, there were a total of four Big Ten teams inside the Top 10, with #1 Oregon, #2 Ohio State, #6 Penn State, and #8 Indiana. For the SEC, there are a total of four teams inside the top 12 with #3 Georgia, #5 Texas, #7 Tennessee, and #12 Alabama. Four of those eight teams I just mentioned don’t have a single Top 25 win, and none of them are undefeated. As much as I hate to say it, get ready for two-loss Big Ten and SEC teams getting into the playoff.
The Big 12 Will Not Get Two Teams in the Playoff
While there was a decent chance of this happening just a week ago, I believe those dreams for the Big 12 are completely off the table right now. Outside of BYU, the next highest-ranked Big 12 team is Iowa State, who is sitting at 17. Despite the Cyclone having just one loss on the season, the playoff committee has multiple two-loss SEC teams in front of them (Ole Miss, LSU, and Alabama).
Iowa State is the only Big 12 school besides BYU who has one loss of fewer. This means that the room for error for Iowa State is very slim. If they slip up again, then I have a hard time seeing a Big 12 team outside of BYU getting in the Top 12. There is a zero percent chance that the committee will put in a two loss Big 12 school who didn’t win their conference championship game. The Big 12’s only hope to get two teams in would be to have a 12-0 BYU team lose to whoever their opponent is in the conference championship game. If BYU goes 12-0 during the regular season, they should be in no matter what happens and then you would have your automatic champion get in with one or more losses.
The danger of that would be Boise State. The Broncos are sitting there inside the Top 12 and if you have a multiple loss Big 12 champion, Boise State could end up stealing one of the top four seeds from the conference which means you would have a conference champion having to play in a first-round game instead of getting a bye.
