It’s been a fact of life for quite some time that the Texas Longhorns have one of the most talented rosters in college football.
Last year, that roster led them to their first Big 12 title in more than a decade and an appearance in the College Football Playoff. It has continued to play a factor for the Longhorns this season too, as they find themselves with a 7-1 record and the No. 5 ranking in the first College Football Playoff Top 25.
One of the downsides to having an incredibly talented roster, however, is the attrition that comes when players feel they aren’t being used to their greatest ability. It appears Texas might have a case of this with one of the most talented wideouts from the 2023 class.
According to a report from Inside Texas, former five-star wideout Johntay Cook is no longer with the program and will enter the transfer portal ahead of next season. The sophomore hadn’t logged a reception since September 28th against Mississippi State and had just 8 receptions for 137 yards (17.1 yards per catch) and two touchdowns on the season.
The 5-foot-11, 175 wideout from DeSoto (TX) was one of the highest-rated recruits in the ’23 class and will certainly garner plenty of attention from teams in need of offensive weapons.
According to Grayson Grundhoefer of SicEm365, the Baylor Bears could be a player in the race to land his services, too.
The Bears are currently on a three-game winning streak and have looked much-improved offensively under Jake Spavital.
So, if Baylor can put together a competitive NIL package for the talented sophomore, it’s reasonable to believe that BU could convince Cook to torch Big 12 secondaries in the future.
