On Monday, following a victory over the 5-5 (1-5 CONF) Oklahoma Sooners, Missouri head coach Eli Drinkwitz made a bold claim about teams in contention for the College Football Playoff.
In a radio interview with SiriusXM College Sports, Drinkwitz mentioned that any SEC team with 10 wins should automatically make the playoff.
“Any team in the SEC that finishes with 10 wins should be in the playoffs,” Drinkwitz said. “I don’t think there’s really any doubt in my mind about that. I don’t know how many are going to get there because there’s a lot of games left to be played, but it feels like every game we play in the SEC is a playoff game.”
While the logic of holding 10 wins in the SEC appears to be a great reason to push a team toward the CFP, in the case of Missouri, the team has a total of seven wins, all of which came against unranked teams. The seven wins came against a list that includes Murray State (1-9, Missouri Valley), Buffalo (5-4, MAC), Boston College (5-4, ACC), Vanderbilt (6-4, SEC), UMass (2-7, FBS Independent), Auburn (3-6, SEC), and Oklahoma (5-5, SEC), a group that holds a collective record of 27-39.
Thankfully, the College Football Playoff rankings have yet to incorporate Drinkwitz’s “10-win SEC” rule into their equation as the group currently sits in 24th place, behind South Carolina, Louisville, LSU, and many more.
