There are just a few weeks left in the 2024 season, and then the talk will shift to the first-ever 12-team College Football Playoff.
This year’s field was as wide open as it had ever been, with 12 spots to fill, but it’s also the first year in recent memory that there isn’t a runaway favorite to win the national championship.
However, the list of realistic College Football Playoff participants has been trimmed down to just 23 teams, according to BetOnline.ag.
Texas (-1800) has the best odds of anyone making the College Football Playoff as of right now, followed by Penn State (-900), Georgia (-500), and Indiana (-500).
Of the 23 teams left with odds, four of those teams reside in the Big 12.
Iowa State has the longest odds of the group, coming in at +750 and having a 11.8% chance of getting there. The Cyclones saw their chances plummet by -16.8% after their second consecutive loss this past weekend with a 45-36 loss to Kansas.
The Big 12 team with the third-best odds to make the playoff is Kansas State, who has +700 odds and a 12.5% chance to make the field.
However, the most shocking part of the Big 12’s CFP odds has to come with how the top two teams in the conference are listed. 17th-ranked Colorado is +100 to make the Playoff, just skirting out No. 6 BYU (+120) as the Big 12 team with the best odds of making it to the CFP.
Colorado’s remaining schedule of Utah, Kansas, Oklahoma State certainly look manageable at this point in the year, which gives them a great shot at making it to the Big 12 Championship with a 10-2 record.
However, BYU’s schedule isn’t overly daunting either, with Kansas, Arizona State, and Houston left on the board and has a genuine chance of ending the season with a 12-0 record.
Are the oddsmakers giving us a hint about who they think will win the Big 12 title game? Or is Colorado simply the school that’s easier to have a market for?
Either way, Deion Sanders’ group officially has the best odds of any Big 12 team to make the playoff. What a time.
