The Big 12 has been the most unpredictable league in college football this season, and there’s not much argument about that.
Look no further than BYU (9-0) and Colorado (7-2) — picked to finish 13th and 11th in the preseason — being atop the Big 12 standings with just three weeks left in the regular season.
Every week, we see chaos take over in the Big 12 as upsets dot the landscape and the standings get flipped on their heads almost like clockwork.
Some of these “upsets” are a byproduct of teams just being better — or worse — than expected in the preseason. However, there are a few teams that have had downright awful luck.
On Friday, a graphic was posted to Twitter that spelled out just how unlucky some teams have been, and two Big 12 programs rank right near the top of the list.
Collegefootballdata.com released this ranking of the “unluckiest teams” in college football this season, based on in-game performance and postgame win expectancies:
The UCF Knights are second only to Auburn, with 6.7 expected wins, but just four actual wins on the year. Meanwhile, Kansas is right behind them, with 5.6 expected wins vs. just three actual wins.
Ask any UCF or KU fan, and they’ll tell you just how tough this season has been compared to what the expectations were, even in-game.
While both of them still have a shot at making a bowl, there’s not much room for error the rest of the way.
Kansas will be on the road at BYU this week, while UCF is on a bye and prepping to face West Virginia next week.
