Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham likely has a unique perspective on the Big 12 football race. He’s played the two teams atop the standings in back-to-back weeks. Last week, Utah lost a nail-biter to BYU, and then on Saturday, the Utes got smoked by Colorado.
So, who does Whittingham think is the better team?
Well in his opening statement following the Colorado loss, Whittingham gave his answer in his opening statement, unprovoked, saying, “That’s a very good football team that we played today. Coach Sanders has done a great job of getting that thing put together. I don’t think there’s any doubt they’re the best team we’ve played this year. Certainly the best group of receivers. Best quarterback. The quarterback is terrific. The receivers as a group, they’ve got a superstar in there obviously, but as a group they’re really good.”

Is that Whittingham just tweaking his rival? It’s easy to assume that, but remember, last week, Utah led most of the game before BYU kicked a game-winning field goal as time expired to beat the Utes 22-21.
For what it’s worth, we had Colorado as the No. 1 team in our Big 12 Power Rankings this past week, given how much better this Buffaloes team has looked in recent weeks, whereas BYU has struggled at times with mediocre teams like Utah and Oklahoma State.
However, it’s BYU who is undefeated at 6-0 in Big 12 play, and 9-0 overall, while Colorado is 6-1 in Big 12 play and 8-2 overall.
Utah actually jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the game after an interception of Shedeur Sanders on the opening drive. But Colorado responded with 14-straight points and never looked back in a 49-24 win over the Utes.
Utah is back home next week to take on the Iowa State Cyclones in Week 13 of the college football seaseon.
