While the Utah Utes still have two games remaining in the 2024 college football season, the team is left with little to play for.
In the event that they pull off upsets against No. 22 Iowa State and UCF, the team will reach bowl eligibility at 6-6, but for many fans, the focus has shifted to the transfer portal and coaching changes.
On Monday, during his weekly press conference, head coach Kyle Whittingham discussed the upcoming transfer portal and what the process of hiring a new offensive coordinator looks like.
As noted by KSLSports’ Josh Furlong, Whittingham mentioned that defensive coordinator Morgan Scalley is working hand-in-hand with him to review the offensive coordinator position and will have a large say in who gets hired to fill the role. He also said, “It’s going to be a heavy shopping season for us in the portal.”
While the offensive coordinator position is one that fans will likely have a better feel for, the transfer portal can be a volatile place. The main question fans are hoping to see answered is which way Whittingham chooses to go at the quarterback position.
Seventh-year senior Cam Rising suffered yet another season-ending injury and is expected to apply for another medical redshirt and receive an eighth year of eligibility. The question remains to be seen if Whittingham feels Rising is the best option or to roll with one of the young quarterbacks on the roster like Isaac Wilson or Sam Huard. Still, a trip to the transfer portal is expected.
Utah returns to action in Week 13 on Saturday, November 23rd, at 6:30 p.m. CT vs. No. 22 Iowa State.
