On Monday, Jerome Tang and the Kansas State Wildcats added a new name from the transfer portal in hopes of redshirting and seeing the court in 2025-26.

That player was former Memphis forward Tyreek Smith, who chose the Wildcats over offers from Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Oregon, West Virginia, Virginia Tech, and Wichita State.

According to On3’s Joe Tipton, the Wildcats added Smith with plans to redshirt the 2024-25 season and take the court in 2025-26.

Smith did not play for Memphis this fall, after the program allegedly failed to hold up their end of the NIL deal originally promised. Prior to the Tigers, Smith played the 2023-24 season for SMU, where he averaged 8.2 points and 5.4 rebounds per game in 19.2 minutes.

Coming out of Trinity Christian School in the Class of 2019, Smith was listed as a three-star prospect by the 247Sports index and the nation’s 142nd-ranked player. He also checked in as the 22nd-ranked player at his position and the 14th-ranked player in the state of Texas.

“High-level athlete with solid size for position,” 247Sports’ Jerry Meyer wrote in 2018. “Quick off the floor as a rebounder and shot blocker. Plays with a competitive motor. Not a ball handler, but he is a finisher. Energy, defender, and rebounder type. Does need to build up body and get stronger. Limited range at this point.”
