There are just a couple of weeks left in the Big 12 regular season, and the conference title race is coming down to the wire.
There are four teams with a realistic shot at making it to Arlington. Barring unprecedented chaos, the two teams meeting for the Big 12 Championship will come from this group of contenders:
- BYU (9-1, 6-1)
- Colorado (8-2, 6-1)
- Arizona State (8-2, 5-2)
- Iowa State (8-2, 5-2)
BYU’s loss to Kansas, combined with Arizona State’s win over Kansas State, made this race almost too close to call heading into Week 13.
However, on Monday, Clark Williams — the Big 12 Vice President of Communications and Strategy — shared some scenarios in which we could see spots in the Dr. Pepper Big 12 Championship secured.
After suffering its first loss of the season last week, BYU can still clinch a spot in the Big 12 title game this weekend with a win over Arizona State, plus Utah win over Iowa State.
Colorado can also lock up a spot in the title game with a win over Kansas combined with wins from BYU and Utah.
As for Arizona State and Iowa State? Arizona State can do a lot for itself by beating BYU this weekend, as that would give them a head-to-head advantage over the Cougars. Iowa State, on the other hand, had better just win out and hope for an upset or two ahead of them.
It feels like this race is going to come down to the final weekend, and with how chaotic this league has been all season, it’s hard to imagine it going any other way.
