On Friday, while discussing the commitment of five-star quarterback Julian Lewis, ESPN’s Cam Newton made an interesting take on Colorado head coach Deion Sanders.
Newton dubbed Coach Prime the “greatest threat to college football since Nick Saban.”
“I would like to say this about Deion Sanders,” Newton said. “Deion Sanders is the greatest threat to college football. I will say this again. Deion Sanders is the greatest threat to college football since Nick Saban. He may even be more threatening than Nick Saban because Deion Sanders has relatability.”
Sanders’ rise to prominence at Colorado has been the biggest story in college football this fall, with the Buffaloes nearing a spot in the Big 12 Championship Game. The team currently sits with a conference record of 6-1, tied for the league lead with BYU.
“When Deion Sanders comes into a kid’s living room, and he’s trying to convince a kid to say, ‘Hey, come to Colorado, or go wherever I’m going to go,’ because so many parents, families, coaches, and even players can relate to who and what Deion Sanders has been through,” Newton continued. “So, yes, that’s why I say what I say. When you’re trying to recruit a kid, it’s bigger than just NIL, which is a lot. But it goes back down to the circumstances of saying, ‘How can I convince a mother, how can I convince a father, how can I convince the uncle, how can I convince the brother? And when Deion Sanders shows up? ‘Must be the money’. The culture is gonna bite down with Prime every time.”
While Deion Sanders has more than earned his flowers in coaching circles already, he still has a challenging task on his plate this week if he hopes to get his team to a Big 12 Championship. The Buffaloes kick off a massive Week 13 game against the surging Kansas Jayhawks on the road at Arrowhead Stadium. That game starts on Saturday, November 23rd, at 2:30 p.m. CT.
