St. John’s head coach Rick Pitino was not happy with the officials at the end of the St. John’s vs. Baylor game on Thursday night.
St. John’s came up short 99-98 in a double-overtime loss, and Pitino had this to say after the game:
“I felt at the end of the game it was highly unethical to go to the camera on a BS make-up and icing my free-throw shooter. Highly unethical and the referees should never let it happen.”
The stoppage in play preceded two free throws from Zuby Ejiofor, who missed both free throws in the double-overtime loss.
Baylor guard Jeremy Roach made a 3-pointer at the buzzer, and the 13th-ranked Bears rallied from five points down in the final 18 seconds of the second overtime to beat No. 22 St. John’s 99-98 on Thursday night at the Baha Mar Championship.
St. John’s led 98-93 when Deivon Smith made one of two free throws with 18 seconds left. The Bears cut it to two on VJ Edgecombe’s 3-pointer and then, here is where the controversy game, BU fouled the Red Storm’s Zuby Ejiofor, who missed both free throws.
Before those final free throws for St. John’s, Scott Drew wanted the refs to go to the monitor to review an elbow thrown, when it was a flop. No review was needed, as everyone knew it was a flop.
Norchad Omier rebounded the second miss with 4.1 seconds left, dribbled up the floor, and passed to Roach. The Duke transfer elevated over Smith and nailed the game-winning three.
Next up for Baylor is No. 11 Tennessee tonight at 8:30 pm CT.
