It was a wild scene in Tempe at the end of Arizona State‘s 28-23 win over BYU to improve to 8-2 on the season and put themselves in a great position to make the Big 12 Championship Game.
But the end of the game was filled with chaos and confusion. Arizona State was on the BYU three-yard line up by five and instead of scoring, the Sun Devils tried to run out the clock by losing yards and running around. Eventually, Arizona State faced a fourth and goal from the BYU 49-yard line with just a few seconds left. Quarterback Sam Leavitt did his best to kill some time and sailed the ball out of bounds.
When the ball landed out of bounds, it looked like there may have been some time left on the clock. But before the officials were able to review it, fans had already rushed the field and the goal posts were coming down. Eventually the officials reviewed the play and determined that there was one second left on the clock.

BYU’s Hail Mary failed and then the real celebration ensued. But that celebration went a little too far for some Sun Devils fans. There was one fan who was arrested as BYU staffers were walking off the field, and the rest received an earful from the BYU faithful.

Needless to say, this could be one of the new rivalries starting to bud in the 16-team, new-look Big 12 Conference. Saturday’s meeting was the first between the two teams since 1998, but maybe this will be a sign of things to come. The Big 12 needs to keep finding rivalries around the conference, and at least geographically, this one makes sense.
