The College Football Playoff Selection Show is just over a week away, and the debates are flying hot and heavy as we roll into the final weekend of the 2024 regular season.
Despite the playoff field expanding from four to 12 teams, there will be those who feel like they were snubbed the opportunity to play for a national title. One of those teams might be Ole Miss, who is ranked 14th in the latest CFP rankings after suffering their third loss of the year.
During an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show, ESPN analyst Nick Saban explained why he thinks there are “subjective issues” that lie within the different levels of competition among conferences.
“The subjective part of this that you can never fix is the conferences are not equal. They’re not equal in depth of good teams, nor are they equal in the quality of the best teams,” Saban said. “So, to give you an example, let’s just take Ole Miss, so I stay away from this whole Alabama thing. So, if Ole Miss played in the Big 12, what would their record be?
It’s fair to wonder what the Rebels’ record might be if they played a Big 12 schedule instead of their SEC slate. Luckily for Saban, the Big 12 has done the work for us — well, sort of.
There’s not a lot of arguing the fact that the Big 12 has dominated the Rebels in their most recent meetings, but what would it look like this season?
Unfortunately, we may never know, but it’s probably safe to assume Ole Miss doesn’t want to draw a Big 12 team in their bowl game.
