While Colorado head coach Deion Sanders has been crushed in the media for some unconventional coaching methods, it’s tough to argue with his results on the football field.
On Friday, after the Cowboys’ 52-0 blowout win over Oklahoma State, Sanders provided his thoughts on players opting out of bowl games, which made some waves in coaching circles.
“Our kids are gonna play in our bowl game because that’s what we signed up to do, and we’re going to finish,” Sanders said. “We’re not gonna tap out because that throws off the structure of next season. There are a couple of teams you can note where they laid an egg in the bowl game, and they haven’t recovered since. We don’t plan on doing that. We plan on going out there fighting just like we fought today, regardless of where we are.”
One program Sanders is likely implying with his words appears to be his alma mater, Florida State. The Seminoles were the talk of the town last season after missing the College Football Playoff despite sporting a perfect record in the regular season. Due to a combination of opt-outs and injuries, Florida State took on the Georgia Bulldogs in the Orange Bowl and got crushed 63-3.
Since then, the team dropped out of their Preseason Top 10 the following year and turned in a horrendous effort in 2024. The team sits dead last at the bottom of the ACC with a 2-9 overall record and 1-7 in conference play.
While the specific bowl game remains up in the air for Colorado, Deion Sanders is taking a lesson from his alma mater and sticking with what got him there instead of making a massive change in bowl season.
