Following another disappointing season for the UCF Knights, Gus Malzahn’s group lost a former starting quarterback to the transfer portal.
That player is true freshman EJ Colson, a talented player from the state of Georgia who the team turned to after benching KJ Jefferson.
Coming out of Cedar Grove High School in the Class of 2024, Colson was listed as a three-star prospect by the 247Sports index and the nation’s 617th-ranked player. He also checked in as the 38th-ranked player at his position and the 70th-ranked player in the state of Georgia.
“Dear UCF,” Colson said. “I hope this message finds you well. It is with a heavy heart that I am writing to inform you of a decision that has not been easy for me but one that I believe is necessary for my future. I have decided to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal with 4 years of eligibility remaining.”
In 2024, Colson started one game for the Knights before being replaced by Miami transfer Jacurri Brown. In the lone outing, Colson finished his matchup vs. Utah with a stat line of eight completions for 70 yards, with one touchdown and one interception.
“I truly appreciate your understanding,” Colson finished. “I am fully committed to finishing this semester strong and supporting my teammates in any way I can during this transition. I am also grateful to all the coaches who have helped me grow by pointing out areas for improvement while also encouraging me and believing in my ability to lead both on and off the field.”
Colson finished his thoughts by saying, “I will always hold the University of Central Florida in the highest regard, and I sincerely wish the program continued success as it evolves.”
