Following a win in the season finale game against West Virginia, Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire highlighted the lack of consistency in College Football Playoff rankings.
McGuire mentioned the parity in college football by highlighting the fact that conference realignment has resulted in multiple teams making the conference championship in their first season in a new league.
“A Big 12 team from last year won the SEC,” McGuire said. “If Oregon wins the Big Ten, that means a Pac-12 team won the Big Ten. If Arizona State wins, that means a Pac-12 team won the Big 12. If SMU wins the ACC, an American team wins the ACC. It’s absolutely embarrassing what the football committee is doing to this conference.”
McGuire’s comments made waves in coaching circles as individuals across the country chimed in on his thoughts. The Texas Tech head coach also brought up the Week 14 matchup between Georgia and Georgia Tech, a game where the No. 7 Bulldogs needed eight overtimes to defeat the fifth-best team in the ACC.
“I just think we need to re-look at this and quit looking at what patch and logo it says on your jersey,” McGuire continued. “Look at the tape. I know some of the guys on there, and I’m shocked that some of the old football coaches who know what they’re looking at are not having more influence when it comes to that committee. I hope they do, and that’s my deal for the Big 12 because I’m proud to be a part of this conference. It’s great football,l and I’m excited to see what happens.”
