It was a disappointing season for the Oklahoma Sooners, as their first year in the SEC ended with a 6-6 record and a 2-6 conference mark.
Under Brent Venables, the OU defense has become one of the best units in the country, but the Sooners offense is bad — like, generationally bad.
Oklahoma failed to score more than two offensive touchdowns in any SEC game this season, and you would have to go back to 1998 to see any offensive statistics that resembled the 2024 numbers in Norman.
However, there’s hope that this will be just a blip on the radar for the program that has long been synonymous with explosive offense. That’s because Oklahoma is officially hiring Washington State offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle as their next play-caller.
At 29 years old, Arbuckle is one of the youngest coordinators in college football, but his quick ascension up the coaching ladder is a testament to his prodigious abilities as a play-caller.
In 2024, Arbuckle’s offense at Washington State ranked seventh in scoring (38.8 ppg), 12th in total offense (454.4 ypg), second in plays of 30+ yards, and eighth in red zone scoring, with touchdowns on 75.56% of their trips deep into opponent territory.
ESPN’s Pete Thamel was the first to report the Sooners are signing a three-year deal with Arbuckle, and will hope that his addition to the staff can get things rolling for an OU offense that ranked 94th in scoring (24.3 ppg).
