UCF football opened up a coaching search over the weekend after head coach Gus Malzahn resigned and took the offensive coordinator position at Florida State.

However, just a few days into the search, it appears the Knights might have found their top candidate to fill the vacancy.

According to a report from FootballScoop, UCF athletic director Terry Mohajir is keying in on Liberty coach Jamey Chadwell.

There haven’t been many names more intriguing than Chadwell over the last several seasons, as the second-year Liberty coach has a 52-10 record and two conference titles over the last five seasons.

Time is of the essence when it comes to hiring a head coach in college football, and with National Signing Day coming up on Wednesday, December 4, it’s essential for the Knights to get this done quickly.

Additionally, the NCAA Transfer Portal is set to open on Monday, December 9, so getting a head coach and staff set in stone will be very important for UCF’s offseason.

Chadwell has proven success over several different stops as a head coach at the FBS and FCS levels. Before his time at Liberty, Chadwell was the head coach for the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers, where he posted a 39-22 overall record, including a 31-5 record over his final three seasons there.

Over his seven-year stint at the FBS, Chadwell boasts a 60-26 overall record and would be considered a homerun hire if the Knights were to land him.
